Announcement:
·    May 1 at 6:30 pm in this room again (room 145) Parent Meeting for the Italy/Greece Trip. This will be a time for new sign ups and parents to ask questions. An experienced chaperone and guest teacher, Mr. Duncan will be present to answer specific questions as well.

Homework: Read Rupert Brook’s poems: “The Dead” and “The Soldier”

1.                       Identify the theme in each poem.
2.                       Identify three poetic devices in each poem and explain how each device contributes to the theme of each poem.

Today in class:


  • Students worked on the District Writing Assessment for both history and English. Tomorrow, they will finish up during the English period only.
  • Today I gave out a WWI document called "Dear Mother." Please read the document and complete the following assignment:

Directions for today’s assignment or tonight’s homework: On a sheet of paper, make a chart with the five senses listed at the top (visual, olfactory (smell), aural (hearing), tactile (touch), and gustatory (taste). Next read through the “Dear Mother” letter, find and cite phrases that reveal one of the five senses, and record them on your chart.
  •  When finished, using your own phrases or phrases from your chart, create a WWI poem of your own. Write it from the perspective of a soldier.

Today we started the District Writing Assessment. This particular assessment is aligned with Smarter Balanced requirements, so it provides students with good practice for the actual exam in two years.

We will work on the writing assessment through Friday. You will turn in your finished product on Friday with all of your notes and test packet.

If you were absent today, you may need to schedule a time to make up the writing assessment on another day with me.

RO= Run on (fix with period or semicolon)
CS=Comma Splice (fix with comma and conjunction, period, semicolon)
Three lines under a letter stand for capitalize.
A circled sp stands for spelling
WW=Wrong Word
Subj/Verb=Verb must match the subject (either singular or plural)

Empty circles=needs some punctuation—which you must decide
